2025 Defence Planned Burn Operations

Hazard reduction burns on defence sites in the Townsville region will commence in March through to August, as part of preparations for the upcoming fire danger period.

The defence sites include Townsville Field Training Area, Lavarack Barracks, Mount Stuart Training Area, RAAF Townsville, Bohle Transmitter Station, Mt Louisa TACAN, Macrossan Training Area, and Halifax Bay Training Area, NAVAID.

The Hazard Reduction Burn Program on defence properties is designed to ensure that both neighbouring communities and the environment are protected from bushfire events.

Defence works in cooperation with site neighbours, local Government, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Parks and wildlife Service to plan and coordinate hazard reduction burn operations on defence sites.

Neighbours and adjoining landholders are advised that:

• All hazard reduction burns are undertaken in accordance with strict safety and environmental guidelines
• Hazard reduction burns only proceed under suitable weather conditions
• Some smoke is inevitable when hazard reduction burns are undertaken, therefore some residents may need to take appropriate precautions
