PROPOSED BUNDABERG EAST LEVEE BUNDABERG CENTRAL AND BUNDABERG EAST QLD 4670
The Public Works Division of the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works is proposing to deliver a flood levee comprising the following:
• An approximately 1.57 kilometre levee with associated floodgates, pump stations and storage and equipment facilities. The levee extends along parts of Quay Street, across Saltwater Creek (Bundaberg Creek), Quay Street East, Scotland Street, Petersen Street, Cran Street and within the Bundaberg Sugar Mill site.
• The height of the levee will be approximately 12m in height at its highest level where located within the bed of Saltwater Creek (Bundaberg Creek), but will generally range between 2m to 4m above ground level on Quay Street East and lower in other areas. The levee will reflect the height required to achieve the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) design flood elevation plus 300mm additional clearance.
• The Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) area includes the land area for the levee infrastructure including the levee wall and access gates, floodgates and pumpstations and storage and equipment facilities. The MID area extends into surrounding tidal areas to allow for construction areas, scour protection, landscaping and construction rehabilitation areas.
• The levee may include sections of temporary barriers where enabled by lower levee heights, including on Quay Street, Petersen Street, the western section of Cran Street and small section within the Sugar Mill site near the eastern end of the levee. The temporary levee barrier will be deployed only during certain flood events and when required under the operations plan for the levee.
• The levee will include openings to enable access (vehicle and pedestrian) when the levee is not activated. In preparation for a flood, rapidly deployable gates will close these openings following an evacuation period.
• During prescribed flood events in the Burnett River (that will be described in the levee Emergency Response Plan), the flood gates will close and water from Saltwater Creek (Bundaberg Creek) and Distillery Creek will be discharged to the Burnett River via the pump stations. This is intended to alleviate flooding of Bundaberg East, Bundaberg South and the CBD.
