NOTICE OF PUBLICATION OF DRAFT PUBLIC ENVIRONMENT REPORT (PER)

VULCAN SOUTH COAL MINE

EPBC 2023/09708

Vitrinite Pty Ltd (Vitrinite), owner of Queensland Coking Coal Pty Ltd (QCC) and Queensland Coal Aust. No. 1 Pty Ltd (QCA1), proposes to construct and operate the Vulcan South Coal Mine (the Project). The Project is located in the Bowen Basin, adjacent to several established mining operations. The Project will extract approximately 13.5 Mt of coking coal (steel-making coal) and will operate for nine years

The project involves the development, operation and rehabilitation of an open cut and highwall mine, producing up to 1.95 million tons per annum (Mtpa) run of mine (ROM) coking coal. Associated infrastructure including administration and workshop facilities, explosives magazine and surface handling facilities will also be constructed as part of the project. The proposed action has been determined a controlled action under the EPBC Act. The controlling provisions are ‘Listed threatened species and communities (sections 18 & 18A), and a water resource, in relation to coal seam gas development and large coal mining developments (sections 24D & 24E)’.
